Aviation Medical Examination

Aviation medical examinations, commonly referred to as aviation medicals or pilot medicals, are comprehensive health assessments designed to ensure the physical and mental fitness of individuals seeking to operate aircraft. These examinations are a crucial component of aviation safety protocols and are mandated by aviation authorities worldwide, such as the Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States or the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in Europe. Aviation medicals aim to assess an individual's overall health, including cardiovascular and respiratory fitness, vision, hearing, and neurological function.

Aviation medicals are conducted by designated aviation medical examiners who are certified by the relevant aviation authority. The examinations are categorized into different classes, such as class l, ll & lll depending on the type of flying activity the individual intends to pursue. Commercial airline pilots, private pilots, and air traffic controllers, for example may have different medical requirements. Regular follow-up examinations are often required to monitor and ensure that aviation professionals maintain the necessary health standards throughout their careers.
